The high school basketball season officially began Monday, but some players are still waiting to be cleared by the CIF Southern Section office.

Notre Dame Sherman Oaks played its season opener against Saugus in the Paul Sutton Classic at Providence High in Burbank without standout freshman Caleb Foster and Mercy Miller. The CIF website lists Foster and Miller as “pending”.

But as the saying goes, the show must go on …

Gonzaga commit Dusty Stromer anchored the Knights to a 73-65 win over Saugus thanks to Stromer’s team-high 22 points. Dante Ogbu added 14 points in the comeback win.

Notre Dame was down seven midway through the third quarter before a 10-2 run helped Stromer and his team to an eventual win. Sophomore Leo Mark scored 13 points. Max Tengen led Saugus with a game-high 24 points.

Foster is signed to play at Duke and Miller – a junior – is verbally committed to Houston. Notre Dame will play against Tuesday against Agoura at 6:30 p.m.

“Paperwork is in. Whenever CIF clears them,” Notre Dame Matt Sargeant said when asked he expects the two standouts to play.

While Foster and Miller await their fate, one of the area’s top girls basketball players, Karlee White, was denied by the CIF Southern Section after transferring from Viewpoint to Oak Park High, along with teammate Chloe Adamo.

White, a senior signed to play at Harvard University, is the reigning CIF Southern Section Division 1 Player of the Year, but because she followed her coach Will Burr, who is now the coach at Oak Park (previously at Viewpoint), she’s not eligible to play. Adamo, who is a junior that transferred with White to Oak Park, was also denied.

West Ranch’s Isaiah Fields is awaiting clearance (pending; transfer from Santa Clarita Christian). Thousand Oaks’ Trent MacLean will serve a sit-out period and be eligible after Christmas (transfer from Westlake).
