Do you believe in life after rock stardom? Can one churn back time? Bryan Adams morphed into a major photographer. Queen’s Brian May became an astrophysicist. Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan is now a boxing promoter. Vanilla Ice restores homes. Blur’s Dave Rowntree is a practicing lawyer.
Now Cher—one of the most famous women in the world—is staging a myriad comeback; but it doesn’t involve a tour, dancers, feathers, or sequins. The pop-rock diva, Oscar-winning actress, and fashion icon is putting a new product into the market: gelato.
If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of her “Cherlato” neon rainbow-hued food truck traipsing around L.A. this weekend, bringing much-needed cold comfort to over-heated Angelenos.
If you want to catch a glimpse – or a lick – you can follow its travels on the Cherlato website and Instagram. For the final weekend of July, the orange, pink, and red truck will make appearances at Abbott Kinney in Venice on July 28 from 4:30 to 8:30 pm; Saturday, July 29 at 7364 Melrose from 1 to 7 pm, and Sunday, July 30 at Melrose Trading Post at Fairfax High School, 12 to 5 pm.
Turns out, the woman known for, among other things, her physique, is an actual ice cream addict. Announcing the sweet treat, Cher hailed her partner in the venture, New Zealand gelato master Giapo.
“The gelato… gets you out of bed at midnight. It’s no secret that I absolutely love ice cream and gelato. When I tasted Giapo’s [Giapo Grazioli] gelato while on tour [2018] in Auckland, New Zealand, it was the best I’d ever had,” said Cher. “When I returned to his store the next day, he had each flavor prepared for me to taste. I loved them all. Giapo is truly the Michelangelo of Gelato. It’s been a long five-year process getting my favorite gelato home to L.A., but I can say it’s well worth it.”
Some of Giapo’s Cherlato unique flavors include odes to Cher like: “Snap Out of It! Kefir & Cardamom,” “Breakfast at Cher’s Coffee & Donuts,” “Chocolate XO Cher,” “Stracciatella Giapo’s Way,” vegan “LA, I Love you,” and – “SoCal’s Coldest Avocado on Toast” – a frozen treat with avocado and breadcrumbs. It’s nothing if not original, just like its namesake.
Grazioi was born in Italy; he and his wife Annarosa created Giapo Gelato fifteen years ago.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with her in bringing the unparalleled taste of freshly made, locally sourced, artisan gelato to Los Angeles,” He said of the Cherlato venture. “It is fun and delicious just the way we like it.”
