A indication of their rising popularity, sales of e-cigarettes increased by ~47% between January 2020 and December 2022, according to a CDC report.

While prefilled device sales decreased over the period, disposable devices increased. Also, sales of flavors that could appeal to youths, such as fruit and candy, also rose.

The agency also found that the number of e-cig brands between 2020 and 2022 also increased — to 269 from 184.

As of December 2022, the top five selling brands were: Vuse, JUUL, Elf Bar, NJOY and Breeze Smoke.

Vuse is made by R.J. Reynolds Vapor Co., which is owned by British American Tobacco (NYSE:BTI). Earlier this month, Altria Group (NYSE:MO) closed on its $2.75B acquisition of NJOY Holdings.

By the end of 2022, disposable e-cigs accounted for ~52% of sales while pre-filled e-cigs accounted for 48%.

The CDC noted that the surge in sales was fueled by sales of non-tobacco flavors, such as menthol, and sweet flavors.

Between 2020 and 2022, sales of flavored e-cigs — such as fruit, clove/spice, candy/sweets and chocolate — increased to 41.3% from 29.2%.

To combat the rise in e-cig purchases, the CDC suggests that sales of flavored products be restricted, as well as further youth prevention strategies, such as price increases, and comprehensive policies that prohibit use of e-cigarettes and smoked tobacco products indoors.
